The story
Hi, I’m Roslyn, the face behind the bones.
I’m a mother of three, wife to one, farmer of many sheep, a few cattle/couple horses, and skull artist.
I fell into skull cleaning and artistry entirely by accident. Several years ago I decided I wanted a gorgeous longhorn skull for my home, but they were impossible to come by.
After a couple of fruitless years, I found a local to me rancher (the anguish knowing they were this close the entire time) who was willing to sell me a raw skull if I wanted it.
I left with three, and a promise to come back as soon as I got my tax return so I could buy all he was willing to sell me.
Life has a funny way of getting in the way of the best laid plans however. Things became a bit more chaotic than I was prepared for, so I spent the next several months focusing on cleaning and restoring the gorgeous skulls I had, while planning my next trip out when I could make it work.
When I decided they were ready, I listed two of them, and they sold quickly.
I kept the last for myself, an amazing over 6ft tip to tip bull skull. He graces my kitchen wall now and we have one sided conversations in the morning over coffee.
I have a full time job off of the farm working as a firefighter/paramedic and I find the slow pace of skull cleaning and creating is a welcome change from constantly having to be “on” when I am working. There are no adrenaline dumps (unless I lose a tooth from someones skull), no deadlines, no timelines and no one is going to have an adverse outcome if their skull needs to degrease an extra month. It is so rewarding to see a gross and gritty longhorn or deer skull be turned into a stunning mount that people want in their homes.
I now have a mountain of skulls being processed so they can be hung up on your wall. Keep an eye out, and follow me on Instagram @calamityjaneskulls to stay up to date on when I have more available.
